Critic’s TV pick: ‘Men in Trees’

When a favorite TV show is canceled, viewers have a dilemma. Do they continue to watch and enjoy remaining episodes, or would it be less painful to make a clean break, avoiding more heartbreak?

That’s the question tonight as “Men in Trees” returns to finish its much-interrupted run. For two seasons, ABC kept fans on a roller coaster of changing time slots and long absences. Most recently, the romantic comedy was pulled off the schedule during May sweeps, left to finish its run after the ratings period ended.

Maybe a quirky, female-centric show with a love-her-or-hate-her star in Anne Heche would never have grown into a true hit. But ABC never found out, instead creating schedule turmoil that made it almost impossible for a show with many continuing storylines to build a big enough audience to succeed. “I wish the show had not been moved six times and put onto two long hiatuses,” creator Jenny Bicks was quoted as saying after the ax fell. “No show could survive that.”

The three remaining episodes are scheduled for 9 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning with tonight’s “New Dogs, Old Tricks.” One story line has Jack (James Tupper) bringing four puppies home from Anchorage, an adorable present that keeps Marin (Heche) from working on her book. Meanwhile, as Annie (Emily Bergl) puts together Elmo’s First Annual Talent Show, she thinks she might be falling for Ivan (Diego Klattenhoff). And in New York, Patrick (Derek Richardson) isn’t sure what Pilar (Sofia Vergara) has in mind for him.
